News Chemical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering achieve top-five places in Guardian rankings 2027 Outstanding results highlight the School’s strength across its subject areas 21 September 2026 Three academics from the Faculty of Engineering have been elected as Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows Congratulations to Professor Meihong Wang and Professor Ian Reaney from the School who join the Royal Academy of Engineering as Fellows. 24 September 2026 Dr Karl Travis joins the Independent Advisory Committee for the Deep Borehole Demonstration Center (DBDC) The Deep Borehole Demonstration Center has added three experts to its Independent Advisory Committee. Dr Karl Travis joins Emeritus Professor Neil Chapman, who is Chair of the committee. 18 September 2026 Mockup of Xerode’s dry electrode printing system, capable of continuous roll-to-roll manufacture. Spinout spotlight: Xerode Xerode, a spinout from the University of Sheffield’s School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering, is developing a solvent-free, dry digital printing process for coating battery electrodes. 16 September 2026 Search Alumnus appointed as the 2024 Ashok Kumar Fellow IChemE and the Materials Processing Institute (MPI) have announced the appointment of Joe Greaves (undergraduate chemical engineering graduate) as the 2024 Ashok Kumar Fellow. 21 February 2025 Surpassing silkworm silk by taking the holistic approach With expert input from the University of Sheffield, a team of researchers from Deakin’s Institute for Frontier Materials’ (IFM) have delivered a world first in next generation materials research. 19 February 2025 Working towards more sustainable lab practices In a pilot study two of our labs have received the bronze LEAF award for sustainability. 18 February 2025 Sheffield donates workshop tooling to local industrial heritage centres The Open Access Mechanical Workshop team has donated surplus tooling to two local heritage sites: Wortley Top Forge and the Midland Railway at Butterley. These organisations both play a vital role in preserving Sheffield’s local engineering history. 14 February 2025 Sharing expertise in India At the start of this year Professor Siddharth Patwardhan visited industry and higher education establishments in India.
