Making friends

There are lots of ways to find like-minded people outside of your course. There are over 390 student-run societies and sports clubs you can join - from padel to medieval reenactment. Not sure about what to join? You can take part in the  to find the right society or activity for you, and meet new people along the way. 

If you’re living in university accommodation, Residence Life events are another great way to meet people. Residence Life hosts over 1,000 free events every year - including dance lessons, cultural celebrations, fitness classes and film marathons.

Join over 2,000 of our students and staff who volunteer their time to support causes and organisations in Sheffield. Our students have raised and given over £120,000 for good causes!

How can we support you?

Our Students’ Union (SU) is a welcoming space with a quiet room, prayer room and LGBTQ+ space. It’s also home to our Student Advice Centre, a professional, impartial, confidential and non-judgemental service, providing advice, support and representation to help you resolve your problems relating to Academic, Housing and Money issues whilst studying at the University of Sheffield. 


A diverse and inclusive community

You’ll find dedicated support and representation for BAME and LGBT+ students through elected officers, student-led committees and societies. These groups offer opportunities to make friends, recognise cultures and bring about change.
