Dear readers, this newsletter is written with project colleague, and introduces our research assessing the corridors of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which are now fully included in the beta version of our GlobalCORRIDOR Atlas (accessible ). The dataset incorporates 233 infrastructure projects encompassing $551.7 billion of investment. The BRI is perhaps the most prominent collected set of infrastructure investments on the planet and a key driver of the corridorisation of territories in recent years. It has, at least partly, been ordered through six corridors, however the precise geographies remain rather vague (and many investments are being implemented beyond these corridors, tracked by organisations such as ). As part of our wider Atlas work we’ve dedicated significant research effort to attempting a more accurate assessment about each of these corridors and the investments that constitute the making of them. Below you can read more about each corridor, the approach we’ve taken and some early observations. As with the rest of the data in the beta version we’re keen to get your feedback before making some final decisions and moving on to some detailed analysis about financing, contractors, costs and other interesting data that has been collated.
