Profile

I am a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Sheffield. I hold a BSc in Psychology from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Neuroscience from the Institute of Psychiatry (King’s College London), and a PhD focused on characterizing the cerebral hemodynamic responses underlying functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Following post-doctoral research funded by the Wellcome Trust and the MRC, I was appointed to a lectureship in Psychology, where I dedicated two decades to advancing our understanding of cerebral hemodynamics. My current research bridges cognitive neuroscience and clinical psychology. Using EEG and psychophysical tasks, I investigate excitation-inhibition (E/I) balance and neural signal complexity in Autistic Spectrum Conditions. A major focus of my recent work centres on open science and data reproducibility in electrophysiology; to this end, I participate in several international consortia working to standardize EEG data collection, analysis, and reliability. Additionally, my research explores how neuromodulation techniques can manipulate working memory capacity and perceptual performance, as well as collaborative efforts to identify at-risk states for serious mental illness.

Qualifications

BSc (Hons) Psychology, Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield.
MSc Neuroscience, Department of Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, University of London.
PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield.
Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT), University of Sheffield

Research interests

My primary research interests centre on four interconnected themes in clinical and cognitive neuroscience:
• Neuromodulation Efficacy: Identifying the neurophysiological and individual factors that govern the efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).
• Neural Complexity in Autism: Investigating neural signal complexity and excitation-inhibition dynamics in Autistic Spectrum Conditions using EEG and psychophysical paradigms.
• Clinical Risk Markers: Developing robust methods to identify and quantify cognitive and behavioural risk states for serious mental illness.
• Open Science & Reproducibility: Improving the rigor, standardization, and reproducibility of EEG data collection and analytical pipelines across multi-site studies.
