Profile

I joined the department in 2021 to take up an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) New Investigator Award. Before this I worked at the University of Manchester: I completed a Medical Research Council funded PhD investigating multisensory processing in autistic adults in 2015 (PI Dr Ellen Poliakoff), then worked in a teaching focused role before taking up a Research Associate position on an ESRC-funded project investigating timing processes in autism (PI Dr Luke Jones).

I began working as a Lecturer in 2023.

Research interests

I am an autism and neurodiversity researcher with a general focus on the experiences of autistic adults. I have a commitment to participatory research and community partnership across my work. My major research interests are:

Attention and neurodivergence
I have a long standing interest in autistic selective attention. Recently, my work in this area has coalesced around monotropism theory, which is an interest based theory of attention which was developed by autistic scholars. I have also been thinking about attention as a situated experience, exploring how environments creates barriers and facilitators for attention function. 

Neuro-inclusion
I research neuro-inclusion, investigating how environments and systems can better support neurodivergent people. My work in this area has spanned primary healthcare, employment and higher education. 
Relatedly, I am interested in improved post-diagnostic support for neurodivergent adults. 

Meta autism research
I am interested in how autism research is conducted and how it can be improved, particularly around open research practice. Working within the neurodiversity paradigm can present interesting challenges and opportunities for the use of open research practices and my work in this area has explored how autism research can be conducted in a transparent, ethical and participatory way.
