On July 10-11th Stephen Allen and Sergej Ljubownikow delivered a workshop on ‘Imagining futures for (your) OS researching’ by working with and at the conference .
The was an experimental and innovative format attempting to maximise inclusion with attendees from around the world, as well as minimising carbon emissions by reducing the need for attendees to fly to the conference. The conference achieved this by being mainly online alongside locally organized meet-ups for face-to-face social interaction in , including the .
It was fantastic to be able to contribute to this exciting and creative approach to academic conferencing through working with Sergej and colleagues at Oxford to deliver the workshop. I learnt so much about the potential futures of OS from the workshop and from involvement in the hub gained first hand understanding about new forms of conferencing.”

Being able to engage with other EGOS Colloquium participants during the virtual conference was a great way to harness the energy of the conference in a more environmentally friendly way. The workshop enabled us all to contribute insightful discussions around the future of OS and organising more broadly. Being able to do so by engaging with local social enterprises enabled both Stephen and me to explore alternative ways of organising first-hand.”
Penny Dick, an Emerita Professor at 51ݶ and an , contributed to the workshop by inspiring workshop attendees with a recorded presentation about the past and future of her research. Four more colleagues from Sheffield travelled to Oxford to join the workshop (Alice Ngo, Anna Zueva, David Littlewood and Ian Jones) which was very well received by those who participated.
It was great to work on this no-fly EGOS conferencing experiment by organising a social hub in Oxford in support of sustainable and inclusive conferencing. Collaborating with Steve and Sergej in support of their workshop at the hub which explored the future of research in OS was a great addition.”
