Experts call for clear regulatory boundaries as reproductive technologies advance

The emergence of new biotechnologies, including stem cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs) and in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), present challenges for existing legal frameworks that regulate how human embryos can be used in research and treatment. In response to these advances, experts met to discuss the governance and regulation needed to support this rapidly evolving field.

"The answer to the question "what is a human embryo?" may seem obvious, but emerging technologies such as in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) and stem cell based embryo models (SCBEMs) challenge our existing legal definitions. It is important that we consider such matters so that our regulatory frameworks are able to support responsible innovation and help to ensure public trust in both science and regulatory frameworks themselves'". Professor Sara Fovargue, Professor of Law at the University of Sheffield.

A key question explored during the workshop, organised by Professor Sara Fovargue and Dr Laura O’Donovan from the School of Law, University of Sheffield, was "whether all human embryos and embryo models merit the same protections in law, and to help define the parameters and challenges that an expanded regulatory framework would need to address." 

A report summarising the key discussions and outcomes has been produced: Embryos and liminal entities: rethinking questions of status and protection in shifting scientific, legal and ethical landscapes.
