Jason has been a lecturer in Geography and Planning since 2021. Prior to this he worked as a Research Associate in the School, on UKRI funded projects exploring public/private sector relations in UK planning, governance responses to the COVID pandemic in Sheffield, and the history of community-led planning in the UK. His current research is on planning and political populism.

Jason’s background cuts across disciplines, with an undergraduate degree in English Literature followed by an MA in Town and Regional Planning. He completed his PhD at the University of Sheffield, on the role of narrative/storytelling in planning, particularly its efficacy for facilitating inclusion and democracy in grassroots contexts.

This work and experience is the foundation for his enduring interest in participation and inclusion – both in planning and academic research – and related questions around democracy and social justice. Furthermore, it underpins his commitment to a planning project broadly conceived to include a range of practices and activities – both statutory and non-statutory – centred on the question of how we collectively make better futures together.

Jason is a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Research interests

Jason has broad research interests in the fields of planning and planning theory, encompassing the contemporary politics of planning, commercialisation and privatisation, storytelling/narrative, planning education, public participation, community-led planning and action research.

Jason is currently primary supervisor for PhD students Fandong Wei and Abigail Upton.
