Scholarship opportunities for 2026-27 entry

ESRC White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to UK and international students wishing to start in October 2026. The competition provides the following awards:

You must have a study offer (a PhD place) in place to be considered for a scholarship. You must apply for the PhD with your finalised documents no later than Wednesday 7th January 2026 if you also intend to apply for a scholarship. This is a strict deadline.

Knoop Scholarship

The Knoop Scholarship is available to students wishing to study a PhD in the School of Economics. It is awarded based on the proposed project’s academic significance, its fit with the School’s research priorities, and the suitability of the applicant and supervisory team. 

The award covers full payment of Home tuition fees for 3.5 years, as well as an annual stipend for living costs (aligned with UKRI rates). As part of the scholarship, students will be expected to complete up to 180 hours per year of Graduate Teaching Assistance which will be paid in addition to the Scholarship at the University’s standard GTA rate. 

To be considered for the Knoop Scholarship, applicants must submit an online application and a fully referenced research proposal. Only applicants who have been made an offer to study for a PhD at the School of Economics will be considered for the Scholarship.  You must have received an offer to study by 20th January 2026 to be considered for the Knoop Scholarship. Applicants must apply by 4th January at the latest in order to allow their application to be processed to meet the deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and it is expected that successful candidates will be informed in April 2027.  

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours degree or above, and a relevant Masters level qualification at Merit or above. English Language requirements are IELTS 7.0, with at least a 6.5 in each component or equivalent.
