Clearing: Your questions answered
Applying for a university place through the UCAS Clearing process may seem like a daunting prospect. Here we answer some of the questions that you might have.
How can I apply for a place at 51²è¹Ý¶ù through Clearing?

Is there a limit to the number of courses I can apply to through Clearing?
You can talk to as many institutions and express an interest in as many courses as you like. You can apply for up to three Sheffield courses in our online application system.
However, when it comes to finalising your place and going through the UCAS process, you can only pick one Clearing choice at a time in your UCAS Hub.
What happens after I've applied for a place at 51²è¹Ý¶ù through Clearing using the online application form or via the helpline?
If you make your application via the Clearing Helpline, in some cases the helpline operator may be able to let you know immediately whether or not we're able to offer you a place, on the basis of the qualifications information you supply.
Alternatively, your details will be forwarded to the academic selection team responsible for the course to which you're applying. They'll consider the information you've provided, including your qualifications information, and decide whether or not we can offer you a place. The Admissions Tutor for the course may contact you to find out more about you and about your choice of course. When the selection team have made a decision, the University's Clearing team will contact you by phone or email to let you know the outcome.
If we offer you a place, you can have time to think about it if you need to – we'll normally ask you to let us know your decision by 11am on Monday 17 August.

How do I accept an offer of a place at 51²è¹Ý¶ù through Clearing?
You can accept our offer either on the phone to our helpline, or online by following the instructions provided in the email we sent you confirming the offer.
When you've accepted our offer, you need to submit a formal Clearing application via UCAS. We'll normally ask you to do this by 11am on Monday 17 August.
You submit your formal application by logging into your and following the instructions. Please ensure that you submit your application for the correct course code and that you have:
- received an offer of a place from the University's Clearing team (either on the phone or by email)
- accepted the offer with the University's Clearing team (either on the phone or online)
If you're already holding an offer at another university, you'll need to release yourself into Clearing by clicking the 'Decline my place' button on your UCAS Hub. You should only do this after you've received email confirmation of your place at 51²è¹Ý¶ù.
When you've processed your formal Clearing application via UCAS, we'll confirm your place at the University of Sheffield.
Please be aware that the UCAS Clearing Application facility is only available after 1pm on Thursday 13 August. You won't be able to formally process your Clearing application via UCAS until after this time. This delay won't affect your Clearing offer from Sheffield.
If you decide that you no longer want to take up your offer, please contact the University's Clearing Helpline (+44 (0) 114 212 9900) so that the place can be released to another applicant.
Will I be able to visit the University?
Yes. Everyone who receives a Clearing offer will be invited to come and meet us at a dedicated open day.
We'll tell you more about the arrangements if we offer you a place.
If I'm offered a place through Clearing will I get accommodation?
Yes. If you accept an offer through Clearing and apply for accommodation by 3 September, we'll guarantee you a place living with University of Sheffield students in University accommodation. See our Accommodation Guarantee for more information.
Applications open on Thursday 13 August and you'll be able to apply through your online University account, MUSE. We'll send you an email inviting you to set up your MUSE account after your academic offer has been formally confirmed at UCAS.
If I was unsuccessful in my original application to Sheffield, but have now been offered a place through Clearing, will I still receive help with accommodation?
Yes. All applicants who accept an offer through Clearing and apply for accommodation by 3 September are guaranteed a place living with University of Sheffield students in University accommodation.
You'll need to make a new accommodation application through MUSE because any previous applications will have been cancelled.
If I accept a place through Clearing will I need to contact anyone about my funding?
Yes, you'll need to let your funding provider know that your circumstances have changed. You can usually do this by logging in to your online account.

If I accept a place through Clearing, what information will I receive and when will I receive it?
When you accept your place, we'll send you an email confirming this and explaining what happens next.
Normally within 24 hours of your offer being formally confirmed at UCAS, we'll send you another email asking you to set up your online University account, MUSE (My University of Sheffield Environment). Please set it up immediately, because you'll need it to complete your accommodation application and pre-registration tasks.
Within the next two weeks we'll email with further information about Welcome Week and registration.
I selected Sheffield as one of my original UCAS choices, and I've appealed one of my results. What should I do?

If you'd like us to consider revised grades, we need to receive these by 3 September 2026 (31 August for Medicine and Dentistry). Unfortunately, after this date we may not be able to confirm your place, even if you've met the conditions of your original offer.
