Golden Globe Race competitors support pioneering neuroscience research
The Golden Globe Race 2026 is helping to raise awareness and vital funds for pioneering neuroscience research at the University of Sheffield’s Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).
The Golden Globe Race is a solo, non-stop sailing challenge that will see competitors embark on journeys expected to last around nine months. Starting and finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, competitors will sail solo and non-stop around the world, covering approximately 30,000 miles and passing through the five Great Capes.
So far, the event has raised £4,500 for SITraN, with fundraising continuing throughout the race.
Based at the University of Sheffield, SITraN brings together world-leading scientists, clinicians and researchers to better understand neurological conditions including motor neuron disease (51²è¹Ý¶ù), Parkinson’s, dementia, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
Through translational research, SITraN works to turn scientific discoveries into new treatments and therapies that can make a meaningful difference to patients and their families.
As part of the race’s continued support for SITraN, competitors came together on 16 August 2026 for the SITraN Challenge charity prologue race before setting off on their solo voyages around the world.
Professor Dame Pamela Shaw, Director of SITraN, said: “We are thrilled to be associated with this prestigious event. Your support and awareness-raising will drive our research effort to a new level for the benefit of patients with neurological conditions. Donations enable us to develop exciting discoveries, emerging from basic neuroscience research, into experimental medicine studies aimed at developing new treatments and better outcomes for our patients. Thank you and good luck to all the skippers.
Supporters can follow the skippers’ progress through daily reports and a live tracker, while donations to SITraN will continue to support pioneering neuroscience research at the University of Sheffield.
